Discovery Trekking is a manufacturer of technical outerwear and next-to-skin custom clothing. We are not primarily a fabric store, but we sometimes purchase hard to find fabrics in greater quantity than we can use ourselves, so we offer them at great prices, and keep our own inventory fresh. These fabrics may sell very quickly, so check back often as we often add new fabrics.
Many of the fabrics we use are made by Polartec® USA. Polartec® was originally known as Malden Mills.
We specialize in technical Polartec® shells, such as Powershield, Neoshell® and Windbloc®. These fabrics are water repellent and have a breathable, windproof barrier. They all make wonderful jackets, vests and pants.
Some have 2 way stretch; some 1 way (side to side), and others have little or no stretch. For your convenience, we will try to categorize by weight (season) then stretch… as this is most helpful when looking for a specific garment.
We also sell Classic Polartec® fleece. 100-weight is very light, 300 is very dense/heavy, 200 is in-between and most common.
Windpro® is a tightly woven fleece that provides water and wind repellence. Amazing for jackets, hats AND is in high demand for diaper covers!
Polartec® Power Dry® is a next-to-skin moisture-wicking fabric. Great for shirts, underwear, sleepwear, and all base layers. We have some wonderful warm High Efficiency Power Dry® on sale which makes terrific long underwear.
We cannot send samples or swatches. We have a warehouse full of constantly changing fabrics, and it is likely that by the time a swatch arrived to the customer, the fabric would already be sold.
Feel free to call us if you wish to ask about fabrics that we don’t currently have for sale on this site.

If you are interested in learning more about softshell and fabric technology, we recommend reading this VERY good article by Sam Shaheen at Blister gear reviews.
Picking the right softshell fabrics for your project
To assist in choosing the right weight and degree of stretch, we have classified our softshell fabrics by Season – Winter, Fall, Spring and Summer. This gives you a general idea of weight, but bear in mind that lighter weights can be layered and worn in cold weather…so it’s just a guide.
Winter Weight Softshells
Polartec® Powershield High Loft is the warmest fabric we carry. It has almost no stretch and makes beautiful jackets that are wind and water repellent, and very breathable. The face is smooth and durable, and the inside is a light pile, which traps air and adds an extra layer of insulation. This is a warm fabric, but is incredibly light for the amount of warmth it offers.
Fall Weight Softshells
Polartec® Powershield is lighter than High Loft and still warm enough for layering in winter or by itself for Spring/Fall. This fabric has a very durable face and is wind and water repellent, and breathable. The insides vary but most are micro fleece or a grid-fleece. They are Moisture wicking from the inside, and super comfortable.
Some fabrics are heavier than others but we have too many styles to list the individual qualities. Some examples are Powershield 02, Powershield Pro, GORE-TEX® and other softshell styles like Pacific Tech that share similar characteristics.
These are all great for pants, jackets or anything that requires comfort stretch.
This is what Polartec® says:
The stiff structure of traditional hard shells not only made them uncomfortable, but caused excessive noise from friction during movement. The inherently soft and pliable construction of Polartec® Power Shield® allow it to easily drape and fit to any underlying form without restricting movement or flexibility.
Providing a relaxed, yet resiliently strong core provides the ability to stretch and recover for a full range of motion during athletic endeavors. By further bolstering abrasion resistant characteristics we developed a higher industry standard for performance soft shell materials. To this day, the innovative properties of Polartec® Power Shield® remain the pinnacle of high performance protective fabrics.

Very limited quantity available, 2 way stretch in Black AND Red! $30/yd
Just added: Lightweight Power Wool 1 way stretch. Beautiful for shirts or lightweight underwear $28/yd
NOTE: Machine wash in cold water, hang to dry. Power wool may shrink 4-5%.
Combining merino and synthetic fibers in our patented hybrid construction enhances the performance benefits of each fiber while resolving many flaws of traditional blends. Wool's natural odor fighting properties are given a boost, and the unpredictability of shrinking and shape loss caused from washing is prevented through the resilience of synthetics.
Wool fibers offer increased base comfort by retaining insulation and breathability even when wet. Their absorbent nature pulls moisture vapor away from your skin, transferring it to the outer synthetic layer where it expands and evaporates more quickly. This mechanical wicking action allows Polartec® Power Wool™ to keep moisture in motion at all times.

Polartec® Power Dry® is a next-to-skin moisture-wicking fabric. Great for shirts, underwear, sleepwear, and all base layers.
We have some wonderful warm High Efficiency Power Dry® on sale which makes terrific long underwear.
NEW! NEW! NEW! We have a very interesting roll of 4 way stretch (Black) waterproof fabric. It is believed to come from Patagonia.
The face is very rubbery, and the inside base is a soft tricot knit. The content is 80% nylon, 20% lycra tricot, bonded to the stretchy polyurethane lamination.
It is very thin. Would probably make great dry bags, or some type of gear that requires waterproof fabric.
The stretch indicates that it would make a super comfy fit for kayaking pants, but it is not breathable. No picture, pretty well everyone knows what black looks like.
